The LOCUS Rule, The Secret To Staying Motivated

Today in this article, I want to share with you the secret to staying motivated, and it might not be what you think, it’s called the locus rule, or the locus concept. and when i was going through youtube i learned a lot through youtube the same way that you do. i came across a channel called, improvement pill and they touched a little bit on this, and i was inspired to read up more on this. as soon as I learned this rule I realized well I actually have to share this with you. So pull out a pen and paper and let’s jump into this secret.

Now the locus rule is actually very simple, if i could just define it in layman’s terms, it’s the degree to which you believe you have control over your life. and to be a very high factor of this locus within your life, it just simply means that you have a lot of control. now let me illustrate this with an example, because it was actually a research study done in the late 1990s, and this professor took a classroom of fifth graders.

Yhey had these kids start solving the same kind of puzzle that was pretty easy to solve, and once these kids went ahead and solved these puzzles, the professor gave them one of two different compliments. to one group she told these kids hey the reason why you did so well as puzzle is because you’re hard working, and to the second group of people that completed the puzzle is because you’re just naturally gifted and talented. now, what happens is they give these kids another set of puzzles and these puzzles are more difficult this time, and what happens is with those kids that were told that they’re gifted and talented, they didn’t put a lot of effort. in fact, a lot of them didn’t even finish the puzzles whereas the first group of kids that were told that they’re hard working, they actually had a much more successful completion rate of the puzzle.

Now, the conclusion of the study is pretty simple as i’m sure you’re beginning to register which is that fifth grade kids eight to nine year old little children are able to subconsciously use their work ethic it just came down to their belief in themselves, and the same is true for you and me because you see, if you are having success in one area of your life, and you start to trick yourself into thinking oh i’m just naturally gifted, i’m just naturally good at this thing, the problem with this is you are now setting yourself up with an identity that begins to lead to arrogance. because, you just think oh i’m naturally gifted i’ve just been given god somehow blessed me and you know what the problem with this is, is that every single person inevitably will run into some kind of roadblock.

You and i will both face some kind of crap that happens in our life because crap happens. so all of a sudden now if you think that you have this god-given gift, and it’s no longer the case because you’re hitting the roadblock all of a sudden your identity is being attacked. you’re starting to think to yourself oh my gosh maybe i’m not gifted maybe i’m not good enough when the reality is you were never good enough and i was never good enough. the reality just comes down to how much control you want to have over your life.

I’ve actually seen this in my own example, when i was a student at ucla a little over a year ago, and i was in these very very difficult classes i graduated with a degree in biology i was taking some very difficult upper division classes. and i vividly remember i had a few peers that were objectively smarter than me, whenever we would sit down and study they would understand concepts so much faster. whenever we would solve problems together they would understand and get to the solution so much faster than me. but, then when it came down to the actual test results the final exams and midterms i would consistently do better, you know the reason why because i put in more work in the preparation of these exams.

i actively knew, look i’m not smart i know i’m not gifted intellectually i do not have a high iq. however, because i had the understanding i now have increased my locus of control, and i now know i need to work hard, because, i need to earn a good grade. because i have a fundamental understanding that i honestly got am not gifted at anything, i therefore, will use my work ethic, i will use my actions to make sure that i am compensated, and i’m gonna reach those levels, that i would have never reached to begin with.

and this actually reminds me of a quote by an english poet well-known william ernst henry who says that i am the master of my fate, the captain of my soul. now, i don’t 100 agree with that because as a christian man of faith i know that god dictates my life. but, at the end of the day i know that my actions me writing this to you right now onto your computer screen or your phone screen, this is an action that i’m actively deciding that i have to work hard to write this article, and i’m gonna mess up, but i’m still gonna get this article out to you with excellence. because, i care about growing this website, and i care about serving you, and you need to have this kind of mindset when it comes to any other kind of activity.

Everything in your life requires work ethic, and then look at it in this lens are you going to choose option number one, and just think that you’re naturally good, or you’re naturally bad at something, and you’re just going to surrender to the environment, are you going to surrender it? or are you gonna take the more difficult option, the right option which is to take ownership.

guess what my mentor always says a hundred million dollar CEO he told me, if you mess up it’s your fault nobody else, if your teammate messes up is nobody’s fault is your fault. take ownership figure it out, and stop being a little baby about it. at the end of the day if you want to be motivated you got to know that if it’s to be, it’s up to me. you got to take ownership and if you want to take ownership over your life, then you need to make sure that you happen to routines, and your rituals are locked in.
